Wormwood by Isabella Kruger5/29/2023 “ Best friends Kayla and Mishalla know they will be separated when the time comes for their Assignments. “ What if you were bound for a new world, about to pledge your life to someone you’d been promised to since birth, and one unexpected violent attack made survival-not love-the issue?” Now, twenty years later, the world is faced with a choice-rebuild what was or make something new.” “ The wars that followed The Collapse nearly destroyed civilization. An ancient evil has been unleashed, turning everday people into hunters, killers, crazies.” But something even more awful is happening. “ Since mankind began, civilizations have always fallen: the Romans, the Greeks, the Aztecs…Now it’s our turn. It’s said that bizarre creatures and superhumans live on the other side, in Away.” The Line is the part of the border that lopped off part of the country, dooming the inhabitants to an unknown fate when the enemy used a banned weapon. Sequel to The Line: “ An invisible, uncrossable physical barrier encloses the Unified States. For those spared, it’s a question of who can be trusted and who is no longer human…” “ An electromagnetic pulse sweeps through the sky, destroying every electronic device and killing billions. “ In 2083, chocolate and coffee are illegal, paper is hard to find, water is carefully rationed, and New York City is rife with crime and poverty.” Young adult dystopian and post-apocalyptic books that will be released this month:Īll These Things I’ve Done by Gabrielle Zevin

William shakespeare 12th night5/29/2023 This book, the purpose of which was to collate all of Shakespeare’s plays into one readily accessible volume, was single-handedly responsible for the survival of 18 plays which would otherwise certainly have disappeared from view, among them such trifles as The Tempest, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure, All’s Well That Ends Well, Antony and Cleopatra, As You Like It, Coriolanus and Macbeth. The Folger Library in Washington DC, determinedly collecting copies between 18, has no less than 82, a third of all known copies worldwide in the British Isles there are 50. The initial print run was for 750 copies only just under a third of them are known, though every two or three years another will emerge, in various states of disrepair, to the enormous enrichment of its owner. Known as the First Folio, it is the apple of auctioneers’ eyes. The book first appeared in print under the title of Mr William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies in 1623, seven years after the author’s death. T his Sunday, 23 April, St George’s Day, traditionally Shakespeare’s birthday, 12 copies of the exceedingly rare first edition of his plays will go on public view around the country.

Klein the shock doctrine5/29/2023 Wealth is consolidated into the hands of the corporate elite. To the outside world, the poverty and disappearances are often invisible. Originally, the idea was that free markets and democratic politics go hand in hand, but as their experiments in Latin America unfolded, it became evident to them that an authoritarian regime was the only kind fully able to use the military might to enforce the kind of full-scale terror necessary to degrade the population to the point where it is incapable of protesting, where it has lost all connection to its culture and values. Milton Friedman and his Chicago School Boys attempt to elevate their aims to a scientific level whenever possible in order to minimize the human element. This is not, however, a project separate from the economic policies. Those who oppose free markets are abducted, tortured, killed or forced into exile. In order to fully achieve that, the primary shock is coupled with a second, more literal one. While the disorientation of the masses allows policies to be implemented, it does not eradicate all opposition.

Julián Is a Mermaid by Jessica Love5/29/2023 I think sometimes there is a telescoping that can happen between generations, and that distance can allow for clearer-seeing. I was very close with my grandmother, she died just before the book was published. Was their relationship inspired at all by your relationship with your grandmother? I love the relationship between Julian and his Nana – it very much reminded me on my own Nan and her love and acceptance when I came out to her. It’s a story about a little boy who lives with his Abuela in Brooklyn, and he loves mermaids. Without giving too much away, can you tell us a bit more about Julian is a Mermaid? Find out more about Jessica and her work here!įirst of all, congratulations on being shortlisted for the Waterstone’s Children’s Book Prize 2019! How does it feel? You will know me novel5/28/2023 Abbott is a literary descendant of Richard Yates, John Cheever and other writers who captured what used to be called lives of quiet desperation. Scene by scene and moment by moment, she keeps you on edge - the same way Breaking Bad did, without the meth or machismo. New York Times The underlying tension she sustains is so beautifully unbearable, you may be unable to leave the couch. She resumes her customary role of black cat, opaque and unblinking, filling her readers with queasy suspicion at every turn. Paula Hawkins, bestselling author of The Girl on the Train What Megan Abbott knows, as so many maestros of the heebie-jeebies do, is that it's not strangers who are scary it's the people you think you know and love. Almost unbearably tense, chilling and addictive, You Will Know Me deftly transports the reader to the hyper-competitive arena of gymnastics where the dreams and aspirations of not just families but entire communities rest on the slender shoulders of one teenage girl.

Something borrowed giffin5/28/2023 Darcy is self-centered and insensitive and has been running all over Rachel forever. But their friendship doesn't seem credible at all. They have been best-friends since childhood. Darcy is a shallow self-serving bitch and Rachel lacks a backbone. old women can't think or talk about anything beyond dating and men.īoth the main characters are annoying. Darcy is part-Samantha, part-Carrie, she has good looks and has always managed to make the guy she liked fall for her and is now engaged to a guy she wants to marry. Rachel is part-Miranada - a not so good looking lawyer, and part-Charolette - miss goody two shoes who wants to find a husband and settle down. I am not going to read this tripe any further.įrom the first 50-ish pages that I did read, this books sounds somewhat like the show 'Sex and the City'.

All the Broken Pieces by Cindi Madsen5/28/2023 Yet the deeper they dig, the less things make sense. Liv knows the details of the car accident that put her in the coma, but as the voices invade her dreams, and her dreams start feeling like memories, she and Spencer seek out answers. But when Liv starts hanging around with Spencer, whose own mysterious past also has him on the fringe, life feels complete for the first time in, well, as long as she can remember. As she stumbles through her junior year, the voices get louder, insisting she please the popular group while simultaneously despising them. Nothing, not even her reflection, seems familiar. Liv comes out of a coma with no memory of her past and two distinct, warring voices inside her head. It's a unique story with layered characters I couldn't help but fall in love with." -Nyrae Dawn, author of Charade " All the Broken Pieces kept me guessing and frantically flipping the pages. |
